Dota Guide on How to Farm Well and Do Well

Introduction

The first and most important part of the this game is Lane Control. It's the most crucial part of dota where it could determine how the game would grows.

Now what is lane control you might ask. It's basically about how well you manage your lane, be it going solo or sharing a double. Lane control only applies mostly during early game where stuffs like experience, gold, creep stats and so on are taken into consideration.

Be very sure to block your own creeps as it will bring enemy creeps nearer to your ancient protector / spirit tower. But please try very hard to block loads of time as it is very important because if you are playing against human players most of them will try to block their creeps too.
But only most of the pros do that if you are playing against a noob you can relaxed more. This will be further explained below.
Note: Only do creep block if you are on mid and top for sentinel, bottom and mid for scourge.
Reasons on another topic.(Somewheredown there)

There are several things that we need to master to have a better lane control and the first one of them is last hitting.

Why Last Hit?

Let me get this straight so that each and everyone of you that are reading this could understand. If you don't do last hitting on the creeps, you're not playing Dota at all. Last hitting plays the biggest role in deciding which side has more lane control. I bet you're probably bored by people telling you or reading in all the guides telling you to last hit. Like it or not, it's the core of the game. If you don't at least try to do it, you're going to be outplayed and pawned.

Most of the guide around tells you to do last hit on the creeps but most of them didn't even mention why. Well last hitting can do a lot more than just getting gold and denying experience. It can also be used to prevent ganks. It's very common nowadays to see people blaming their teammates just because they fail to report missing heroes well guess what? Instead of relying on your teammate and blaming them, you should just practice your last hitting and lane control.

Some of my friends which laned with me early on request for lane switching just because they can't get the creeps because I last hit everyone of it. What's worst is that some of them wouldn't even try to last hit at all. Just try your very best to last hit

There's an old saying that "you can't fail if you don't give up," and everytime whenever I see my teammates just give up last hitting, I would get really, really pissed. Which bring me back to my main point, if you're not doing last hitting, you're not playing DotA at all. Being competative is what DotA is all about and if you wouldn't even try to outplay your own teammate, you're taking the route down to loser-hill.

How To Last Hit?

To really last hit well and produce positive result, there are two parts that you should really have to master and understand. The first one is the micro (micromanagement) aspect and the other one is the macro (macromanagement) aspect. Micro simply means how well you control your hero. For example, how good you are with your keyboard and mouse. While the macro aspect focus more on the bigger picture.

Micro Of Last Hit

I know most of you know how to last hit but for those of you who don't, practice makes perfect. The key to effective last hitting lies in the ranged druid/necro creep. Try to keep your Alt button pressed at all times to see the creeps health and focus your eyes movement between the creeps health and the druid/necro's animation shots. While waiting for the creeps' health to go low, move your heroes left and right or back and forth. This is where tempo builds up. Believe it or not, the sound plays a big role in last hitting too. Let your mind wander off while you are focusing on the druid/necro shots and just move your hero according to the sound tempo. When it's time to score a creep, Right-Click it alternatively you can press AlT+ A and left click on the creeps which is more surer you will get the creep.

Macro Of Last Hit

This technique or theory is something I would like to call the Ying & Yang factor. (A Chinese Stuff)

First you have to imagine that each creeps represents a tin of beer and a wave makes a pack of it.

Now each of the single red square represents the creep health points. The creep wave in DotA is well balanced with both sides having the same number of creeps and having the similiar attack speed and attack damage. Now the theory here is that if you don't request your hero to deal any damage to the enemy wave, the place where the creeps from both side meet will always be the same.

If your hero takes one hit on the creep, the balance of the creep waves are disturbed (and move to the right, just like the picture above). So basically, in order to restore the balance and make the creep waves stay in a constant place, for each of the hit that you deal with the enemy creep, you have to deal the same amount of damage back to your creep. It's a simple concept of 'give and take'.

Consistency plays a major role in this advance last hitting technique. So whenever you're last hitting, it is better that you train yourself to last hit with only ONE hit on each creep and not two nor three hits, due to the fact that allied creep can only be denied when their HP are lower than half. That way, it would be easier for you to control the balance.

With this knowledge in mind, you can manipulate and make the creep waves to meet whenever you want. And this thus far has helped me a lot in staying in a lane farming from a very safe distance that kept me from being ganked. There were several times that an enemy stood in the forest waiting for me to push futher so that he could gank me, but I just keep the creep waves balanced the waves can't be pushed. Eventually, he took off after waiting for like minutes.

Besides that, you can also counter-push your creep back to your towers. It is something called 'lane deny'. Basically it's just denying your creeps whenever they're at half HP, just to maximize the deny output. That is, pushing the balance to your side.

Creep Pulling & Creep Blocking

Besides the Ying & Yang technique, you can also use these two techniques to pull your creeps closer to your tower so that it would be difficult for the enemy to gank you.

Creep pulling is a technique of pulling the neutral creeps out of their lair far enough so that your creep wave can engage them and get their travel course changed. The key to creep pulling successfully is through timing. Just check your minimap on your creep wave's location and their movement speed. Then just time your hit on the neutral creeps and lead them out so that they'll bump into your creep wave.

As for creep blocking, it's a technique of using your hero to block the creep by standing in front of them. It always ticks me off whenever I see people blocking creeps everytime the first wave of the game comes out because they don't even know what creep blocking is for, they just do it because pros are doing it without even asking why. For example, the Sentinel bottom lane, blocking the first wave would just engage the Sentinel tower with the enemy's creep wave and what happens next is the second wave being pushed further to the enemy's side. Which is a bad thing because it leaves you vulnerable to gank. Only creep block whenever you have to, not whenever you want to.

Minimap & Map-Awareness

The minimap is by far the most famous tool in DotA. It tells you everything you need to know about the happenings of the map. It tells you the the enemy's location and it helps you time your attacks, etc.

For me, I like to set the colour option so that each and every single heroes on the map has different colours. Everytime at the start of the match, I'd like to memorize and match the colours the enemy to the hero that they're using so that I could tell the location of each hero whenever I just look at the minimap later.

It is very common in DotA that the player whine and bitch whenever they are killed by a missing hero whom his teammate fail to report earlier. Well most of them are noobs who just fail to make use of the minimap. All of this wouldn't have happen if he checked his minimap constantly. By 'constantly' I mean every few seconds. For me, personally, I would check the minimap whenever after a creep wave.

5 is a very small number and counting it by looking at the minimap could save your ass.

Animation Canceling

Animation canceling is the act of canceling your hero backswing animation so that he could do another attack or cast another spell after the first one.

The reason why peole do animation cancel is to maximize the damage output and to counter Silencer's Last Word aura. Basically, Silencer's Last Word only kicks in after the whole animation for a spell has finished but if you manage to cancel the animation after the spell has dealt the damage, the aura won't affect you.

To do animation canceling, you just cast your spell and immediately commands your hero to move forward then cast another spell. The trick here is when you're ordering your hero to move, be sure to only click it ONCE and not spam it after the projectile or the spell has already hit your enemy. After you has canceled the animation, be sure to wait for a quick pause before you continue with the second spell. It's something called 'canceling too early' because the whole animation canceling won't be that much effective.

Summary

  • Always practice Last Hitting.
  • Be consistance when last hitting. Always remember the 'Give and Take' concept, the 'Ying and Yang' factor. One hit for one.
  • Pull the creeps or block the creeps whenever your lane is pushed far away.
  • Remember the colours of the enemy heroes.
  • Always check your minimap for missing hero everytime a new creep wave comes out.
  • Always practice Animation Canceling. Stay Alive!
  • Please be sure to watch carefully you can even use mathematics if you are good at althogh it is slower.

Early game: She is a early game caster late game killer!!!

Pros
Good Supporter
A dangerous hero killer if used wisely
A very good late gamer
Good late game beyong godlike
Early game super harraser
A good farmer
Can escape easily out of battle ( so you wont need to buy lothar or any stupid money wasting items!!!

Cons
Low strenght and intel gain-sovable
Spells have high mana cost-solvable
Low damage-sovable
Requires practice to master elunes arrow-Yup hard to aim but you will get the hang of it.

Getting started:
Ok so u random Mirana great!!! IF you choose her nice taste!!!The key thing now is to farm and farm and farm!!!!

Items at start:

Boots of SpeedRing of ProtectionAncient Tango of EssifationLesser Clarity Potion

The reason for getting these items at the beginning is very simple, You can start of with the boots because you would need it for your boots of travel eventhough you may not be making it soon. The ring of protection not only gives you armor but it is a start in making your arcane ring which should be the first item to complete, the tangos are for survivability in the lanes, as a PotM it is not good to remain in a lane with low health, it is also cheap and better for you than a flask and the clarity potions are for until you get your arcane ring and void stone.
Note: you can skip the rop if you want.Because buying an arcane ring not only made you little skill dependant it also slow your way to better items!!! Anyway you can change the arcane ring to vanguard. Sometimes I buy arcane ring too so i advise u buy arcane ring or vanguard depending on the enemies. If you face heavy nukers like lich, lina, zeus or whoever have nuke buy vanguard if you fac weak agility hero (like yourself) buy arcane ring to spam your starfall and harrass them but be careful they might harass back or call for lane switch which both can prove pain too you.

Lane Situation
Further lane sitation is discuss here.
For lane assignment go top if sentinel and bottom for scourge beacause you want to ascess the secret shop to buy energy booster for arcane ring and ring of health and vitality booster for vanguard

Facing heroes
1 melee heroes-This is fun for you, last hit until you have level 2/3 star fall and do what I said before by waiting until the hero comes in for a last hit and activate star fall when you know that they are within range, try to activate it when the hero is probably within 500 range, therefore if they begin to run as soon as you activate your star fall he will still get hit.

Early Game:

Pros-

Good Supporter
A dangerous hero killer if used wisely
A very good late gamer
A good farmer
Can escape easily out of battle

Cons-

Low strenght and intel gain
Spells have high mana cost
Low damage
Requires practice to master elunes arrow

  • GAME START

So lucky for you and your team you randomed Mirana or chose her yourself, the key thing now is to farm wisely, avoid large battles and assist your team where needed but dont forget to take a kill when it is a sure one because your hp isnt really that high at this point.

  • ITEMS AT START

Boots of SpeedRing of ProtectionAncient Tango of EssifationLesser Clarity Potion If you are going for arcane ring.

If you are going for vanguard.

Creep Blocking

Please try to creep block as much as possible since your creep will be nearer to your tower.

  • LANE SITUATIONS

Because you would need an energy booster to complete your arcane ring you may want to top if sentinel or bottom if scourge but you can change it aroung if you want,I would only go middle if somehow a heavy nuker isnt there.

1 melee hero- This is fun for you, last hit until you have level 2/3 star fall which is about level 5 and 7. Wait until the hero comes in for a last hit and activate star fall when you know that they are within range, try to activate it when the hero is probably within 500 range, therefore if they begin to run as soon as you activate your star fall he will still get hit.

2 melee heroes- This is twice the fun because by using the same technique above then you would be harassing two heroes and getting a lot of last hits. However dont get carried away because in this situation the heroes would probably try to double up on you and kill you so remember to stand your ground and dont advance to far away.

1 range hero- This isnt really hard because of your range, the only thing is that you may not get to harass the opponent that often with your starfall so when you get your arcane ring use it on the creeps and anytime you get a chance to damage your opponent.

2 ranged heroes- The best thing to do in this situation is to just last hit or maybe ask for a partner, preferably a spammer so you can support him with your arcane ring and play it safe.

All mid in a big game- Just stand your distance and star fall the melee heroes that advance to close for comfort, it you see a hero with low health running away and you have the chance to kill him with your elune's arrow dont hesitae to do it but shoot it form a smart area.

General tactics
Just keep last hitting and harassing with arcane if against nukers and normal hit melee opponent if buy vanguard.

Side tactics
If you have the skill or are very lucky try to elune arrow your opponent and maybe get a kill but don't advance too far cause if he call a few friend to gb you, you are doom. And dun constantly spam elune arrow if u dun have the skill to shoot good train against AI heroes at first when you get the hang of it play in a real match also try to master your real skill on aiming elune's arrow.

Pushing
If you buy a vanguard and your opponent is a weak agility hero then push a little bit.
If you buy a arcane ring and your opponent is a strong nuker do not push cause you need the safety of your tower.

Last Hitting and Denying
Last hit when your creep hp bar turn red and deny when opponent creep hp bar turn red.
Try to get good at this skill as it is vital for a weak early gamer hero like you.
If you want more information on this topic please view caspian's guide to dota in dotastrategy.com

HERO KILLING

Some people may see this hero as a not very good hero killer but thats just because they cant use her well, the key to getting early kills is your star fall and your elunes arrow. However at this stage I would advise to kill with the help of an ally preferably a disabler such as shadow shaman or demon witch with there hex so that star fall will do full damage.

ENDING INVENTORY

If you go for vanguard

If you farmed well and going for arcane ring.

Boots of Speed Arcane Ring
Perseverance

If it wasnt that easy and going for arcane
Boots of Speed Wraith Band
Arcane Ring

For Vanguard chooser
Priestess of The Moon is a early game caster, later game damage dealer.
Now if you understand that statement, you will agree with my item build. While your starfall and arrow are sufficient early game, it lacks fire power late game. As such, She transforms in to a damage dealer. Also, remember you are damage dealer like Clinkz and not a tanker. You should stay back and fight.

For Arcane Rings chooser
If you agree to the above statement you would also go for this build as casters need mp.

Note: Please avoid heavy nukers.

Middle Game
For Vanguard Chooser
This is where you can start to hunt. By this time you should be finishing Desolator or dps items. This is the time Ultimates are at level 2. You should be as defensive as you are offensive. Hunt with your team mates. Anything goes wrong, use Moonlight and start running. One thing to note about your Moonlight. If you want to use it, use it early and not at the last moment. Remember your windwalk have a fade time unlike Bone’s or Bounty Hunter’s windwalk. This is also the phase of the match where your role from caster shifts to damage dealer. Always remember. Strength lies in numbers. Ambush together. Or if the hero is weak enough with no natural escape abilities such as Zues or Sniper, feel free kill them alone. But be aware of baits. Zues and Sniper are typical baits. If you sense everyone is missing and a half HP Zeus is farming alone at top, do not bother hunting him down. Always remember to Play Smart.

For Arcane Ring chooser
  • FARMING

Well by now you should have your arcane ring so farming is no problem because now you can spam you star fall and reduce the creeps' health so that you can kill them in one hit and get the gold from the last hit. If there is someone in your lane then
the better thing to do is to use your star fall when the hero is in range together with the creeps. Remember anything between 600 range will get hit so average wisely but it wont be that hard since your range is 600.

  • PUSHING

With your arcane ring this is the stage to push and destroy towers but dont relentlessly push by having the creep battles in the range of your tower what you need to do is create a back and forth movement of creep battles from your tower to the enemy tower. This will ensure extra time to attack the tower while your creeps are attacking the tower also. This would also create a little safety from the possibility of a gank i.e. while you are attacking the enemy tower someone may appear behind you and take you away from your safety of your tower but if this happens you can leap towards your tower to escape.

  • HERO KILLING

This may usually be done at this stage with the help of your team. There are different ways you can kill heroes, you can follow these steps below:

Leap towards the hero and activate star fall.
Begin attacking (you will attack faster because of the effect of Leap).
Chase with the movement speed bonus of Leap.
Finish of with Elunes Arrow from a distance. (Notice not always effective as these are skill dependant)

While behind your team but in range, activate star fall.
Attack a selected hero that you can kill or your team wants to kill.
Leap to chase and finish off with Elunes Arrow.

While your taem is in battle shoot an elunes arrow from far at the hero which they are targeting.
Leap towards the hero while it is stunned and begin attacking, your team would gain a speed increase also.Activate star fall. These are just some of the combos that you can use according to what the battle entails.

Late Game:

For Arcane rings chooser

Overview

Push as if you were going crazy because its not hero kills that win games it is team work, the ability to stay alive and the efforts of relentless pushing.

  • PUSHING

If you completed your boots of travel instead of a power treads then you can push on multiple lanes making it harder for your opponents to counter push back towards your base. Use the same farming technique as before in mid-game but you can change your safety farming habits into one of bruth force but keep your eyes open for missing heroes on the map and also look at your teamates in case they need help so you can save them with your ultimate.

  • HERO KILLING

At this stage you can solo heroes easily but with respect to your team you can refer to the hero killing methods above in the mid-game section.

For Vanguard
Same as above but change items.

SKILLS!!!~~~
How to use Star fall-

Star fall is your close to spammable skill eventhough it has a high mana cost, it is the skill that you would be using the most therefore you must know how to efficiently use it. It is best used agains melee heroes mainly those with low health (melee/ranged agillity heroes), the main range of the skill is 600 range but just for safety it is best used at an average of 500 range or less because if when you activate it the enemy hero has decided to fall back a little he wouldnt get hit so the extra 100 range takes care of that. You can also use it with leap and hope that the hero would get hit twice because you have a chance that a random hero wihin 200 range will get hit twice to do a total of 450 damage after spell reduction.

How to use Elunes Arrow- This skill is similar to Pudge's Meat Hook because it targets an area and not a unit therefore it is harder to use than most stuns and it will stun according to the distance the arrow travelled, the further the distance the longer the stun. However it has certain differences from Pudge's hook such as it has 3 times the range, it goes through ally units, and you can cast it and move away immediately. The key to this skill is practice and when you master it your team would love you and your enemies would hate you.
You can visit this link to see a pro use elunes arrow at full potential

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMNWa9ZT2Nc

note the above link is provided by madman007 again sorry for taking your links.

How to use Leap-

This is one of your escape skills and it is also your chase skill because it gives a speed bonus to not only you but to your allies. However it is not as easy to use as blink or time walk etc you must be facing the direction you wish to leap in order to go there so before you activate it look at the direction which Mirana is facing because if you dont you can leap into trees and other directions which would mess up a chase or get you killed when you are fleeing.

How to use Moonlight Shadow-

This is an escape skill for you and your team and the great thing is that it has no area restriction it will turn your allies invisible no matter where they are. It can also be used to gank heroes since you can make you and your team invisibel so that they can sneak up on enemies and kill them with their devastating spells such as AOE spells like Magnus and Treant Protector.

Ok most of the skills above are taken by madman007 sorry!!! But i edited his spelling and somethings.I only edited 1 is~~~ sorry
